Battery Reads 0v across red/black but 12 volts across barrel plug

I recently received my ROSOrin ROS2 Smart Robot Kit (standard edition, Jetson Orin Nano version, with the stereo depth camera add-on).

The included 11.1V 6000mAh battery pack is defective out of the box: its discharge output is dead, so the robot cannot power on.

Diagnosis performed with a multimeter:

  1. The battery charges normally with the included charger — indicator goes red, then green when complete.
  2. The barrel (charging) lead measures over 12V, confirming the cells are fully charged.
  3. The red/black output lead measures 0V — no output at all.
  4. I re-tested after applying the charger for one minute to reset the protection circuit; the output still reads 0V.
  5. Additionally, when the red/black output lead is connected to the robot, the battery stops indicating charging entirely — further suggesting a faulty protection circuit (BMS).
  6. With the battery connected to the robot’s power terminals (red to red, black to black, connectors fully seated) and the power switch on, the robot shows no LEDs and no signs of power.

The cells hold charge but the pack’s output/protection board has failed.

Is there anything else I should do or test? I think my battery is defective.

Dear Gary,

Thank you for your email.

Based on your description, we preliminarily suspect that the battery is defective and may need to be replaced. If it is indeed faulty, we will issue a replacement for you, as it is covered under warranty. However, before we can proceed, we kindly ask for your cooperation in providing some additional information to help us move the process forward.

Please let us know what steps you took after receiving the robot and whether you noticed any unusual behavior. Additionally, please record a short video showing:

  1. The robot being powered on with all cables properly connected, showing whether there is any response from the robot.

  2. The complete process of testing the battery using your multimeter.

Our engineers will carefully review the video to determine the exact issue. This will help us resolve the problem for you as quickly as possible and expedite the battery replacement process.

We look forward to your reply.
